Each piece of equipment included in a Set has a number of Set Bonuses associated with it. The tooltip at the bottom of the item will tell you what Set Bonuses are available. The Set Bonuses will show in a red box.
Some of these bonuses are exclusive to certain equipment. For instance, if you equip the full Phantom Armor set you will receive +8 defense (compared to the normal +3 defense included in the majority of gear). Certain sets are only available by completing certain tasks or by purchasing them from the Auction House.

Purple (Very Rare) Sets, PvP sets and Archetype Origin sets are exempt from this rule and their set bonuses work regardless of the level of the item's exemplar.
