Path of Exile Item Upgrading
The most effective way to upgrade your equipment in Path of Exile is through item upgrades. This allows you to upgrade your gear without having rely on expensive drops or trades. This article will show you how to upgrade your items efficiently.
Upgrades to equipment provide an additional bonus to the item's stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component's level and rarity.
Components
Upgrade components are the items that can make your weapons and armor more effective. They can be obtained by fighting off enemies, locating them in item spheres, or buying them from karma dealers. They can also be salvaged from equipment with them, or through an advanced salvage kit such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. In contrast to other items upgrade components, upgrade components aren't destroyed when they are removed from an item.
Upgrade components are typically used to upgrade an item, however, they can also be used for other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level of an item that can be upgraded or they can be used to increase the amount of experience gained from upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can be forged to give extra bonuses. A glyph that has been crafted can increase the chances of upgrading its target, while a boost upgrade increases the attack or defense attributes of weapons.
Selecting an upgrade template in the GUI will allow you to connect it to an item. This will show an upgrade component list that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either scenario, the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components are collected.
Each component has its own experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item will gain when upgraded using that component. Organic components, for example have more experience multipliers than mechanical components. It is recommended to upgrade your organic components first until you reach the next rank in the weapon or equipment and then switch to the mechanical upgrades.
In addition to the experience multiplier every item also has the maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of upgradeable items is determined by their upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade they are able to receive. The highest upgrade possible is a weapon of tier 10. However, the most commonly used weapon upgrades are a tier 6 weapon and an armor upgrade of tier 5.
Sets
A set is a collection of objects that all share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at the least once. The upgrade will increase the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade the set piece or weapon is that it will be given an increase of +1 to its primary stat. On subsequent upgrades the stats of the primary one will be boosted a little more (for instance, +1 to 12+/13+/14+), and each time you upgrade the item it will have one of its additional stats is increased randomly.
Upgrading a weapon can also increase its damage base, which can be crucial for certain builds. However, weapons can't be upgraded to have a higher defense base than their regular base. Aside from practice equipment, all other armor and weapons gain the same stats when they are leveled up. The market determines the value of these stats. A weapon or armor with perfect rolls can fetch an incredibly higher price than an unupp'd version. This is also true for other armor pieces, like tiaras or circlets.
